The Convention Secretariat of WHO FCTC and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly organized a South-South and Triangular cooperation meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay from 29 September to 1 October 2015 with the support of funds from the EU grant and kindly hosted by the Government of Uruguay. The objective of the meeting was to and identify South-South and triangular cooperation for tobacco control, matching potential partners on a range of tobacco control measures and facilitating the creation of proposals to undertake these collaborative initiatives to promote fuller implementation of the Convention.

The meeting brought together Parties who could provide support (providers) and those that needed support (recipients), intergovernmental organizations and NGOs and knowledge hubs. The idea was to create a space to share best practices, experiences and current activities in the areas of legislation, law enforcement, national coordination mechanisms, industry interference, trade and litigation, taxation, illicit trade, packaging and pictorial health warning and plain packaging, product regulation and disclosure, cessation, alternative livelihood, shisha and smokeless tobacco. Twenty two Parties from all six regions participated in the meeting.

As a result of this, eight South-South and Triangular cooperation projects were identified and six have consolidated. The Convention Secretariat through the EU funds provided some seed grants for these projects which the Convention Secretariat hopes will result in long term collaboration.
