Driving change with parliamentarians

Around the globe, parliamentarians play a pivotal role in advancing tobacco control by enacting laws and policies that ensure implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). These lawmakers also approve budgets that support the objectives of the WHO FCTC and work to hold governments accountable for improving public health.

By engaging with parliamentarians, the Convention Secretariat ensures support for the WHO FCTC and the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products in building healthier and fairer societies for all.

Health

The WHO FCTC includes a range evidence-based measures that have saved millions of lives. Parliamentarians can ensure better health outcomes in their countries by supporting and promoting full implementation of the WHO FCTC and the Protocol.

Funding for tobacco control

Sustained resources are critical. All Parties to the WHO FCTC are committed to the development and implementation of fully funded multisectoral national tobacco control strategies, plans and programmes. Parliamentarians must advocate for their governments to fund national tobacco control measures and support global efforts to ensure adequate financing of the WHO FCTC and the Protocol.

Commitment

Leadership matters. Parliamentarians must continue to play a key role in holding governments accountable to implement the WHO FCTC and Protocol and foster the political will needed to end the national and global tobacco epidemics.
