6th meeting of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) Knowledge Hubs

25 – 27 September 2023
Helsinki

The Convention Secretariat works with institutions that serve as knowledge hubs and assist Parties and the Convention Secretariat in several technical areas of the Convention. So far, the Convention Secretariat has established nine WHO FCTC knowledge hubs, at least one in each of the WHO regions. The Convention Secretariat supports and coordinates with the knowledge hubs on their operation, and on their implementation of the agreed work plans, to ensure the fulfilling of the COP mandates and respond to the requests received from the Parties. As part of this coordination, regular meetings are organized, offering a platform for information exchange and mutual learning.

The objectives of the meeting included the following:

-                  To receive updated information on the guidance, governing body meetings and other initiatives organized or provided by the Convention Secretariat;

-                  To exchange information on the programs and workplans of the knowledge hubs, the resources developed and experiences (including challenges and needs) gathered during their work;

-                  To further synergize the work of the knowledge hubs to maximize the assistance provided to individual Parties on their implementation of the WHO FCTC;

-                  To plan to further build and develop a cohesive and critical mass of knowledge in key areas of tobacco control (specifically and primarily in the areas of work of the knowledge hubs), and gradually become the “go-to resource hub” for Parties and other interested actors;

-                  To promote joint programming and stronger collaboration between the hubs, under the overall coordination of the Convention Secretariat, in programmes that could benefit all Parties;

-  To explore strategies to guarantee financial sustainability of the knowledge hubs.
