''Montenegro is encouraged to use a whole-of-government approach to reverse the current trend of the tobacco epidemic'', said Dr Adriana Blanco Marquizo, today, 30 September at the launch of the FCTC 2030 project in the country.

Today’s launch event witnessed the participation of Dr Jelena Borovinić, Honourable Minister of Health of Montenegro and a wide range of tobacco control stakeholders from other government departments and civil society.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Borovinić thanked the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC and partners for selecting Montenegro amongst the nine new Parties that recently joined Phase 3 of the FCTC 2030 project.

“I believe that with our joint efforts, we will be able to further strengthen the enforcement of the Law on Limiting the Use of Tobacco Products in accordance with the WHO FCTC and its guidelines,” the Honorable Minister added.

Recalling the importance of a multisectoral response to tobacco control, Dr. Mina Brajovic, WHO Country Representative in Montenegro noted that the country is experiencing an upward trend in smoking amongst women and youth - “a key target of the tobacco industry,” she added.

With its high prevalence of tobacco use, the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC, through FCTC 2030 project, will provide targeted technical and financial support to Montenegro’s efforts to curb the tobacco epidemic.
