Frequently Asked Questions on Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-azar)

Overview

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a group of diseases caused by a parasitic protozoa. Humans are infected via the bite of a type of sandflies, which breed in forest areas, caves, or the burrows of small rodents. VL affects the poorest communities with limited access to diagnosis and treatment. Three most affected countries in the South-East Asia Region are Bangladesh, India and Nepal, while Bhutan has reported sporadic cases.
