Overview
Mauritius has been a leader in Africa in terms of requirements for tobacco packaging and labelling. As a country with a population of 1.3 million, Mauritius has demonstrated how a relatively small nation can be successful in adopting advanced tobacco control legislation on packaging and labelling. The Mauritius experience – as described by Vinoda Pitchamootoo Vythelingam of the Mauritius Ministry of Health and Quality of Life – can be an example for many other Parties. This is important because welldesigned package warnings are an effective means to increase awareness of the health effects of tobacco use, and to reduce tobacco use.
