Viable Alternatives to Tobacco growing: an economic model for implementing Articles 17 and 18

An economic model for implementing Articles 17 and 18

Overview

There are 1.1 billion tobacco consumers in the world, which is expected to increase to 1.6 billion by 2035. Consumption of tobacco products is increasing globally, though it is decreasing in some highincome and upper middle-income countries. Nearly 80% of the world’s one billion smokers live in low and middle-income countries. In developing countries, smokers spend sometimes as much as 30% of their income on tobacco, thus, reducing their expenditure on nutrition, education and health care. 100 million people died from tobacco-related diseases in the 20th century and 1 billion people could die this century from tobacco-related diseases. Tobacco kills up to 50% of the people who use it or rather abuse it.
